the Lola Project
"The Lola Project" is a social practice/participatory project centering diasporic Filipinx matriarchal narratives with the use of social media and collective memory. The project has held residence at UNDISCOVERED SF, the Filipino Cultural Night Market aimed at driving Filipino visibility and economic development in SOMA Pilipinas, the newly designated Filipino Cultural Heritage District in San Francisco. Aligning with UNDISCOVERED's mission of increasing visibility, the project aims to highlight the narratives of women in Filipino immigrant families, whose labor often goes unnoticed and unrecorded. The project also aims to subvert American capitalistic experiences of 'Culture', as one that is monetized and consumable. Amidst a market of small vendors and pop up restaurants, "the Lola Project" booth asks participants to pause, remember their ancestors, and honor their familial legacies of resilience they have established as immigrants and settlers.
